The need to compile a check-list o f the European marine m olluscs was discussed during the 10th International M alacological C ongress (T übingen, 1989) and a resolution was passed to this effect by the General Assembly o f Unitas M alacologica, and Anders Warén (Stockholm) and Philippe Bouchet (Paris) were asked to investigate into its feasability. The acronym CLEM AM (Check List o f the European M Arine M olluscs) was chosen because o f its sim ilarity to CLO FN A M and CLOFETA, the very successful regional checklists o f Fishes com piled under the um brella o f UNESCO. In 1994, an a d h o c m eeting, funded by U nitas M alacologica, brought together in Paris m alacologists representing several regional or national lists o f marine molluscs: ( i ) R iccardo G iannuzzi-S avelli, rep resen tin g the C a ta lo g o a n n o ta to d e i m o llu s c h i m a r i n i d e l M e d i t e r r á n e o , com piled by B. Sabelli, R. G iannuzzi-Savelli and D. Bedulii (1992) for Società Italiana di M alacologia, and published by Librería Naturalística Bolognese, Bologna. (ii) Elizabeth Platts, representing the C h e c k lis t o f B r itis h M a r in e M o llu sc a , compiled by D. Heppell and S. Smith (1991), and published by the National Museums o f Scotland. (iii) Jon-A m e Sneli, representing the A n n o ta te d c h e c k ? list o f m a rin e m o llu s c s o f th e N o rw e g ia n c o a st a n d a d ja c e n t w a te rs , compiled by T. Hoisaeter (1986) and published in Sars/a, 71: 73-145. In the following year, electronic versions o f these three lists, in addition to a card catalogue o f post-1960 names, w ere m erged by Serge Gofas into a single list in text form at. The resulting list was then transform ed into database form at by Jacques Le Renard, and the first C LEM A M was presented at the 12th International Malacological Congress (Vigo, 1995). C onsidering the data added since 1995, CLEM AM currently contains ca. 15,000 nam es and over 3,300 valid species. N ew literature is perm anently scanned for new m aterial. Old literature is also being scanned for synonym s and gaps in taxonom ical coverage. As of 1999, illustrations o f type material of valid species and synonym s are being added to the backbone o f taxonomical and nomenclatural information. All native species, benthic or planktonic, and introduced species that have become established are listed in CLEM AM . Old and/or unconfirm ed records o f non? native species are excluded. CLEM AM records published information only and does not make new taxonom ical decisions. W hen different state-of-the-art taxonomical opinions exist in the recent littérature, the taxonom ic editor records w hat he thinks best reflects the needs o f the users o f the database.
