2013 ii 摘要 相较于中文教育背景的华人,海峡华人这群以英文为主要语言的非中 文源流华族群体在没有语障碍下与他族有更频密的互动,从英殖民时代至 今,他们的行为举止更能影响他族对华族的看法与了解,在促进马来西亚多 元种族互谅与融合、在马来西亚的建国与历史进程中扮演了重要与有效的角 色,具有不容抹杀的时代意义.

本研究通过对海峡华人精英林碧颜个人、其家世、所处时代背景的探 索,梳理在英殖民统治下受西式教育成长的海峡知识分子和时代、他族精英 分子的互动;

他们在游走于英国、本土与中国文化间面对时代变局时的身份 认同转变和他们在马来西亚建国过程的贡献. 这项研究希望打破华族华文与英文教育源流者之间的隔阂,促进对这 一华裔群体的了解;

为尚待努力的海峡华人研究加一页、为缺少社会、法律、人权、妇女运动与公职人员研究的部分补遗,同时填补马来西亚华人历 史与人物研究中独缺女性代表性人物的空白,为呈现马来西亚历史全貌作努 力. 林碧颜身为跨领域海峡精英分子在参与建国历史中刻下的清晰足迹, 证明除了陈祯禄、陈修信、林建寿、李光耀等担任政党党魁的海峡华人外, 其他的海峡华人也曾对建国作出贡献. iii ABSTRACT Comparing to the Chinese educated Chinese, the Straits Chinese who use English as their main language, and who comes from a non-Chinese oriented background has a closer interaction with other ethnic groups due to the lack of language barrier. Since the British colonial era, their behaviors and conduct are more able to influence the perception and understanding of other ethnic groups towards the Chinese ethnicity. They play an important and effective role in the development and historical process of Malaysia, and also in promoting mutual understanding and integration in a multi-racial Malaysia. The prevalence of the era significance cannot be denied. By exploring the elite Straits Chinese Lim Phaik Gan, her family background and the era she was living in, this research analyses the era, those Straits Settlement'

s intellectuals who have grown up under the Western Education of the British colonization, and also the interaction of these elites;

their identity transformation when they face the changes of era as they wander between British, Malaysian and Chinese cultures, and also their contribution in the process of the nation-building of Malaysia. This study hopes to break the barriers of the Chinese community and English educated Chinese, to promote the understanding of these English-educated Chinese group;

to add pages to the lack of Straits Chinese research, to supplement the lack of research in the areas of social, legal, human rights, women'

s movement and public officials;

In the meantime to fill the gap of the lack of female representative figures in the Malaysian Chinese history and its character study, and to put in effort for a comprehensive representation of the Malaysian history. Lim Phaik Gan, as inter-disciplinary Strait elite has carved a very clear footprint in the participation of the country'
