353 Porphyromonas family and Fusobacteri- um species (2, 4, 6, 35). Jacobs et al. (19) reported the frequency of b-lactamase production in Prevotella (71%), Porphy- romonas (30%) and Fusobacterium (41%) strains of medical origin (19). b- Lactam resistance and b-lactamase pro- duction have been detected in some oral species of Fusobacterium, Prevotella and Porphyromonas (5, 17, 20, 22, 24, 38) and in some other microaerophilic oral rods (14, 25, 42), but data concern- ing resistance of anaerobic gram-nega- tive rods in the oral ecosystem are scarce (5, 23, 28, 51). The aim of the present study was to determine the susceptibility status of b- lactams and the prevalence of b-lactam- ase production in anaerobic gram-nega- tive rods isolated from patients with rapidly progressive period........
